Top Tips for Jobseekers 2025
For many, the new year will simply be a continuation of their job search in a very competitive job market. We have compiled some top tips for you to take on board, as you keep navigating through this difficult process.
Your CV
A stand-out CV is your only assurance in moving forward to secure those interviews.
Essential to include are relevant achievements that developed new skills; any side hustle or relevant outside interests that display additional skills; and work experiences written in context to what you personally achieved.
When seeking to elevate or write a new CV it’s extremely difficult to sell yourself and identify details you had not thought to include. Seeking outside help with your CV is essential to obtaining a new perspective and ensuring your CV is the best it can be.
Salary
Only apply for roles offering salaries that you can afford to live on.
Salary ranges can mean flexibility on salary depending on your experience, or uncertainty from hiring managers on the market rate - ensure you have a figure you will not compromise on.
If you are seeking your first role, note that salary expectations have risen hugely due to the cost of living. In 2023 the average salary sought by graduates was £33,500 so bear this in mind if seeking roles as a graduate.
Prioritise:
Hybrid is the norm and, if a new or second jobseeker, you will need to learn from your peers, collaborate with your team, make new friends and be involved in socials. If you work entirely remotely you will progress more slowly and miss out on having fun and building crucial social skills. Hybrid is the perfect balance.
Career trajectory and progression should be ascertained with your recruiter (or at interview). Ask what this looks like from a timeline perspective and what their training and development opportunities are. This will also ensure you sound interested enough in the company to look at the opportunity for the long-term.
Apply for multiple positions, to ensure you don’t put all your hopes on the one ‘perfect’ role but set aside time to dedicate to preparing thoroughly for each interview - you will need to be 'interview ready' to stand a chance of progressing with the level of competition out there.
Obtain feedback from every interview you are rejected from so you can improve for the next one. Accept you were not right for the position and don’t allow yourself to feel bitter about the result. Your time will present itself eventually. It isn’t personal – the hiring managers are looking for the person who has the most experience and someone else did. Move on.
Using ChatGPT/AI
AI technologies can be a useful guide to developing your CV but AI cannot think critically or analytically when detailing your work experience achievements in context.
AI will use industry-relevant generic buzzwords that will fail to convey anything about the qualities or uniqueness that is you. The results may secure you an interview, but not the job, so ensure everything confirmed can be explained and put into context during your interview. Remember the person behind the CV seals the deal!
AI is a useful addition to your job search, just remember the importance of not losing authenticity in the process.
Large companies who can afford AI technologies set AI filters to reject applicants where CVs lack original content, passion, and any humanity, so beware!
